The Vasco da Gama of the Modern World ⛵

The Portuguese digital factory is ready for global labeling, packaging and textile challenges by Lorenzo Villa.

Founded in 2010 as an integrator of inkjet technology, MTEX NS has achieved the size, expertise and production capacity of a (small) global manufacturer.

In European manufacturing geography, Portugal may not be comparable to Germany or Italy, yet its northern area is home to one of one of the most advanced textile, footwear and wine districts in the world. Similarly, Eloi Ferreira will hardly be remembered as the modern Vasco Da Gama of the printing industry. Yet, for a few years now, our curiosity about what is happening at Vila Nova de Famalicão has only increased. Initially, MTEX was considered to be a small, self-styled provider, which came to seek trouble in the ultra-conservative textile arena. Having passed the ITMA 2015 uninjured and being bravely faced with Drupa 2016, the Portuguese company has therefore created the New Solution brand and the first inkjet machines for labels and corrugated cardboard. An initiative that to the most skeptical observers seemed to be a mix between a poker move and a heresy. However, we were further encouraged to learn more about the account and expertise of the young brand, its founder and its team. After announcing OEM partnerships with Heidelberg and Konica Minolta, and attending the big MTEX Summit last October, we organised an expedition to Porto to find out and tell you who and what is behind what is set to be one of the most dynamic digital industries in Europe.
